Recently I got the chance to study and learn from some of the greatest magicians in the world. Welcome to Blackpool Magic Convention, an event that happens once a year in Blackpool that brings Magicians from every corner of the globe to study, share secrets and socialise at one of the biggest and best events in the magical community. This convention proved to be one of the biggest with over 3’500 attendees and over 100 magic dealers and teachers offering their latest and greatest creations.
Each day is packed with master classes and shows by some of the greatest magicians in the world. This year had a fantastic line up of FISM World Champions such as Tabary, Rocco, Paul Gertner, Daryl, Henry Evans, Rick Merril and possibly the biggest name of the convention, Las Vegas Super Star Jeff McBride.
The great thing about these conventions is that these world champions and TV stars stars such as Dynamo and David Blaine, mingle with the conventioneers and are quite happy just sit, chat and help each other out. I was lucky enough to get hands on tuition from one of the most original and skillful card manipulators in the world, Anson Lee.
I studied with Anson briefly as he taught me the Quad; a one handed production of 4 cards forming a star shape in the hand. One of the most difficult but beautiful card productions I have ever seen. For those of you that have not seen Anson Lee perform, check out the link below and appreciate one of the most skillful and beautiful card acts around today.
On the final of the convention was a lecture I had been waiting for, A young magician called Jordan Gomez. Jordan has been a highlight of gala shows at magic conventions all over the world. His highly original DJ themed act features CD productions at unbelievable speed and skillful displays of multiple CD’s. Jordan offered some great advice including the importance of the first twenty seconds of your act and how this will effect the overall response that you will them receive for the remainder of your show. I have chatted with Jordan over email for a few months leading up to the convention but got an opportunity to study with him in person and learn an unbelievable routine where a £10 turns to a £50 in the blink of an eye! Check out Jordan’s superb act below.
The highlight of the convention for me was to meet my biggest hero in magic, Rocco: The Worlds Most Original Magician. Rocco competed at the FISM World Championships of Magic in Sweden 2006 and won first place for the most original act. It’s an act that in my opinion still remains one of the most original and magical acts I have ever seen. Its almost like watching Tony Montana (The Godfather) perform magic, so cool and effortless. It represent the kind of magic where if magic really did exist, and you were hungry, then why not just reach into the air and produce an ice cream! Hey, forget about it! Check out his award winning act below.
Getting a chance to meet Rocco face to face awesome. We shared a few laughs and he gave me some real solid advice, easily one of the nicest guys I've had the pleasure to meet. Getting a chance to meet in person and for him to take the time to chat with me like and old friend was pretty inspirational. I went away feeling like I could achieve anything, because here was I Matthew McGurk, hanging around with this huge magic star and world champion! I’m now ready to get into the rehearsal room and start creating some new incredible magic, maybe one day he will get a chance to watch it, who knows?
